Welcome to Year 1. We are so pleased with how well the children have settled and have grasped new routines. We look forward to a busy and exciting year.
Our topic this term is “Pirates” which will link some of the work we will be covering this term: Our Science theme is Materials and Properties. In DT the children will think about their choice of textiles to design and make a lavender bag with our flowers from the garden. Children will be learning to use laptops in their Computing lessons this year. In History we will look at the explorer Christopher Columbus and his voyage to America. In RE we will be finding out why some stories are special, with a particular focus on Christianity and Diwali. The children are always encouraged to bring in relevant items of interest, books or information they have found to support the topic. Please ensure that any items brought in are named.
We shall be learning about stories in a familiar setting this term.
Please continue to read daily with your child and comment on their reading in their communication books. Regular practice ensures that the children make good progress. The children will be given the opportunity to change their reading book every day. However, if they have not had an opportunity to read it or if you would like them to have it for more than one night, then please keep it.
The children will bring home a half-termly spelling list to be tested on at the beginning and end of each term. It would be really beneficial to their learning if they could practise these at home. In addition they will also bring home a weekly spelling pattern to support the sounds we are learning in class. These will be tested each Friday.
The children will be working on many areas of maths during the term including counting to a hundred, adding about subtracting, measuring and identifying shapes. At home it would really give them an advantage if you could practise counting in ones and tens and help them in the recognition and reading of numbers around them.
The children have been issued with a new maths pack for the duration of Key Stage One. This follows a different format to Reception so please see your pack for more information.
Our focus in P.E this term will be gymnastics and children will learn how to control their body when travelling, balancing and copying sequences. Although our P.E. days are Wednesdays and Thursdays, it would be useful if the children could have their PE kits in school every day. You may wish to provide your child with a pair of tracksuit bottoms to wear when the weather gets a little chillier and it would be useful for girls who wear tights to have a pair of socks in their kit too. Please can you ensure that all items of PE kit are labelled with your child’s name. Thank you.
Show and Tell:
We will restrict Show and Tell to Tuesday afternoons. As far as possible please can this be related to our Topic.
Can you please ensure that your child has a named water bottle in school every day? Thank you.
We look forward to seeing you at the Curriculum Evening and on Parents’ Evening but if you have any questions or concerns please do not hesitate to see us before or after school.
Thank you for your support,
Lilly Baker and Jane Rowe
