I hope you’ve all had a lovely,
relaxing Christmas break and are now fully rested. The children have already
got off to a fantastic, energetic start!
Topic: Our topic this first half term is ‘From the Darkest Peru’ which will link some of the work we will be
covering this term. In our Science lessons, the children will be looking at
different animals, classifying them and finding similarities and differences.
The children will be thinking about how animals are suited to the environment
they live in. In DT the children will be using clay to build and create animals from the Amazon Rainforest, as well as using different textures and materials to weave
in a traditional Peruvian style. In Geography, we will be looking at the
country of Peru, and how it is different from our own locality. We will be
thinking about what people do there, and how their lifestyles are different
(and similar) to our own. In our RE lessons, we will be finding out about
special stories and what makes them special.
The children are always encouraged to bring in relevant items of interest,
books or information they have found to support the topic. Please ensure that
any items brought in are named.
English: This term we are looking in detail at the story of Paddington
Bear. We spend time getting to know the characters and the plot, before we
create our own story for Paddington. In addition to this, the children will be
reading and learning a poem ready for the Northleach Poetry Competition.
Phonics and handwriting will be taking place each day.
Reading: Please continue to read daily with your child and comment on
their reading in their communication books. Regular practice ensures that the
children make good progress. The children will be given the opportunity to
change their reading book every day. However, if they have not had an
opportunity to read it or if you would like them to have it for more than one
night, then please keep it.
Spelling: The children will bring home a half-termly spelling list to
be tested on at the beginning and end of each term. It would be really
beneficial to their learning if they could practise these at home. In addition
they will also bring home a weekly spelling pattern on a Friday to support the
sounds we are learning in class. These words will be tested the following Friday.
Maths: The children will be working on many areas of maths during
the term including measuring and compare lengths and weights as well as
beginning to look at multiplication. At home, it would really give them an
advantage if you could practise counting forwards and backwards up to 50, as
well as reinforcing 1 more and 1 less to 50.
P.E: Our focus in P.E this term will be on Yoga - the children
will learn how to maintain balances and co-ordinate their bodies to change into
different poses. Although our P.E. days are Mondays and Wednesday, it would be
useful if the children could have their PE kits in school every day. You may
wish to provide your child with a pair of tracksuit bottoms to wear when the
weather gets a little chillier and it would be useful for girls who wear tights
to have a pair of socks in their kit too. Please can you ensure that all items
of PE kit are labelled with your child’s name. Thank you.
Show and Tell: Show and tell will continue to take place on Wednesday
afternoons. As far as possible please can this be related to our Topic.
