Hello, Summer Term!

Dear Parents/Carers,
I hope you’ve all had a lovely, relaxing Easter break and are now fully rested and full of chocolate. The children are already working hard and enjoying our new topic!

Topic:
Our topic this term is ‘Who put the colours in the rainbow?’ which will link some of the work we will be covering. We will be focusing on each day of the Christian Creation Story, creating 6 mini areas of study over the 12 weeks. These include: light and dark, the sun and the moon, plants and living creatures.
Our Science this term is all about plants. The children will be looking at plants and seasons and we’ll be doing some planting of our own!
In our RE lessons, we will be finding out who created the world and why we need to look after it. We will be using this as the basis of all the work that we do. The children are always encouraged to bring in relevant items of interest, books or information they have found to support the topic. Please ensure that any items brought in are named.

English:
This term we are looking at improving the quality of our writing, and becoming more independent and Year 2 ready! We will be reading various stories as the foundation of our work, and using the themes to consolidate our spelling, punctuation and grammar work. Some of these stories include, The Owl that was Afraid of the Dark, The Little Gardener and How to Catch a Star. Phonics and handwriting will be taking place each day as usual.
With the Phonics Screening Test fast approaching, children may be receiving packs of sounds that they struggle with. I would appreciate if you could go through these with them regularly as this will help to consolidate those newer, more challenging sounds.

Reading:
Please continue to read daily with your child and comment on their reading in their communication books. Regular practice ensures that the children make good progress. The children will be given the opportunity to change their reading book every day. However, if they have not had an opportunity to read it or if you would like them to have it for more than one night, then please keep it.

Spelling:
The children will bring home a half-termly spelling list to be tested on at the beginning and end of each term. It would be really beneficial to their learning if they could practise these at home. In addition they will also bring home a weekly spelling pattern on a Friday to support the sounds we are learning in class. These words will be tested the following Friday.

Maths:
In Maths this term, we will be focusing on a variety of different areas, such as telling the time, fractions and money. Therefore any practise at home of these skills would be incredibly beneficial! We will also be continuing to practise our 1 more and 1 less, and counting in 2s, 5s and 10s.

P.E:
Our focus in P.E this term will be on gymnastics – children will be learning sequences of movements, as well as improving their balancing and jumping skills. Children will also continue to have weekly sports coach sessions, focusing on cricket and athletics. Although our P.E. days are Mondays and Wednesday, it would be useful if the children could have their PE kits in school every day. Please can you ensure that all items of PE kit are labelled with your child’s name. Thank you.

Show and Tell:
Show and tell will continue to take place on Wednesday afternoons. Although I am aware it may be difficult this term, as our topic is quite broad, please can these be as topic-related as possible.

Thank you for your continual support,

Miss Lilly Baker
